Lecturer/Senior Lecturer Post: Petroleum Geology

The Department of Geology at the University of Fort Hare has enjoyed tremendous growth in both teaching, research and outreach in the last 5 years.  The department has highly motivated staff with a strong desire to carry out research in niche areas of economic, mining and exploration geology, water resource and quality management, geohydrology, geochemistry, petrology, exploration geophysics and petroleum geophysics. We are seeking a high achieving lecturer with industrial/expertise in Petroleum Geology.  Excellent literacy and oral communication skills in the English language are essential as the successful candidate will be teaching and mentoring second-language students at both undergraduate and Honours level. Active participation in, and initiative with, undergraduate practical projects and post-graduate research programmes will be a requirement. The successful applicant will be expected to work effectively in a team environment.  The department is on the Alice campus which is one of the safest and enjoyable place to work and live in the Eastern Cape Province.  An initial two years contract will be offered, but may be extended based on the performance of the individual and availability of funding.

 Requirements for Lectureship

  • B Sc Honours in Geology and a M Sc degree with a strong component in petroleum geophysics, geology and sedimentology.
  • A minimum of 2 years industrial experience in a petroleum field;
  • At least 3 papers presented at conferences or published in journals; and
  • Good teamwork, communication, commitment and interpersonal skills.

Requirements for Senior Lectureship

  • PhD degree with a strong component in petroleum geophysics, geology and sedimentology.
  • A minimum of 10 years industrial experience in a petroleum field or relevant field;
  • More than 10 journal papers; and
  • Good teamwork, communication, commitment and interpersonal skills.

Key responsibilities:

  • Teach sedimentology, economic and petroleum geology, and some applied geology courses at undergraduate and Honours levels;
  • Recruit and supervise postgraduate students;
  • Work with other staff  to start a petroleum geology programme
  • Initiate research projects and apply for research funding from academic and industrial grant providers;
  • Carry out research and publish the results.
