In 1968, the black civil rights and black power movements reached new heights in the United States. In the same year the South African Students Organisation was launched under the leadership of Bantu Steven Biko. For the next in our series of Dispatch Dialogues we present Dr Saleem Badat, Rhodes University Vice Chancellor and author of the book Black Man, You Are On Your Own, and Nkosinathi Biko of the Steve Biko Foundation. They will discuss Badat's book, which analyses the ideology, politics and organisation of SASO and its intellectual, political and social determinants. It also analyses SASO's role in the educational, social and political spheres and the factors that shaped its activities. Finally, it assesses SASO's contribution to the popular struggle against apartheid education and race, class and gender oppression.
