VC’s Emerging Researcher Award (2010)

Staff members and students in the Department of Livestock and Pasture Science wish to congratulate their Head of Department, Dr Voster Muchenje, for getting the Vice Chancellor's Emerging Research Award. This award is based on the quality of research outputs, including publications and presentations at conferences, contribution to research programmes or projects, involvement in teaching research and supervising students' research and recognition by peers. Dr Muchenje is an NRF Y2 (Young Promising) rated scientist. He leads a 21-member team (mostly PhD and masters students) that is conducting research on animal welfare, meat science and the Nguni cattle. Dr Muchenje has published more than 70 research articles high impact journals, conference proceedings and popular publications. Some of the organizations/individuals funding his research activities are the GMRDC, the NRF, the Meat Industry Trust, the SA Pig Producers Association and Adam Fleming. Some of his research activities have been broadcast as documentaries by SABC2. Dr Muchenje is a member of the Department of Science & Technology's Innovative Program for the SA Red Meat Industry. He was a facilitator at 2010 SA Annual PhD Project Conference. Dr Muchenje is a member of the SA Society for Animal Science (SASAS) and the American Meat Science Association (AMSA). He also reviews scientific manuscripts for several high impact journals and is an external examiner for several universities.
